Three Golds and a Silver for Aussie sailors

Australian medallists at the 2010 Skandia Sail for Gold RegattaThe Australian Sailing Team has won three Golds and a Silver medal on a thrilling final day of the 2010 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth, England.

Tom Slingsby, along with Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen claimed their second successive World Cup victories on the 2012 London Olympic Games venue in the Laser and 49er class respectively while Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Olivia Price won an enthralling Women’s Match Racing final and Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page claimed Silver in the men’s 470 class.

Slingsby was the first Australian sailor in action in the Laser medal race and only had one man in his sights, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Gold medalist Paul Goodison who started eight points behind and was the only sailor capable of taking the overall victory from Slingsby.

Slingsby, a two-time Laser World Champion, was ruthless in the pre-start not allowing Goodison any room to move with both sailors exchanging penalties before the race began. Once underway the Australian had his competitor’s measure, forcing Goodison into last place and eventually crossed the line in eighth position, two ahead of Goodison, to claim the Gold medal.

“I had an eight point advantage on Paul Goodison which meant he needed to get four boats between us,” said Slingsby. “I decided to take the safer option and go for a match race as you never know what the wind is going to do on these shifty courses close to shore.”

“The match race went pretty well, a few penalties went both ways and I ended up coming off the line a little better at the favoured boat end,” he said. “From then on I sort of controlled him and tried to put him back as far as possible, it worked well and I ended up coming away with the overall win.”

“I love it here, I always said in China that I never really felt at home and just couldn’t get used to the conditions whereas here to me it feels like sailing in Australia, sailing off Sydney heads where I train which is great,” said Slingsby.

While Slingsby was sailing to his third consecutive World Cup victory the Australian Women’s Match Racing Team crew of Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Olivia Price were locked in a Gold medal final battle with Claire Leroy and crew from France.

The Australian trio took out the first two races in the best of five series, sailing exceptionally well in the challenging conditions. Leroy got a race back to leave the score at two to one heading into the fourth race.

The Australians then led race four almost from start to finish crossing the line first and claiming the Gold medal, their first ISAF Sailing World Cup Gold as a team.

“We’re pretty excited with today’s win,” said Souter. “We raced really well today, won the first two races pretty convincingly but then Claire gave us a bit of a challenge in the third but we sailed really well in the last to take the win and as a team we’re thrilled.”

Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen went into the 49er medal race with a 12 point lead over the French crew Manu Dyen and Stephane Christidis with two British crews tied for third just three points further back.

The Australian pair sailed a smart race, kept check of their competition and crossed the line in fourth place to give them a 17 point victory. The win continued the great run they’ve had since teaming up early in 2009, having now won eight of the nine regattas they’ve competed in together.

“It was an interesting medal race,” said Outteridge. “The French were over at the start which sort of gave us the upper hand, from there we tried to maintain the boats around us and sat in fifth or sixth the whole race.”

“There was a bit of position changing in front and behind us but we managed to hold onto our spot and end up with the overall win,” he said.

“There was a lot going on the whole way through the medal race,” said crew Jensen. “We spent the last part of the race trying to figure out who would be second and third as we knew that we were pretty safe as our main competitors were a bit deep. We figured if we held onto fourth we’d be safe and that’s what happened.”

In the men’s 470 class 2010 World Champions Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page went into the medal race two points behind the French crew of Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos and much like Tom Slingsby experienced earlier in the day it came down to two boats with the Australians and the French covering each other the whole way.

“We went into the medal race knowing that whoever beat who was going to come out with the title,” said Belcher. “We thought we sailed quite a good race, about halfway through we had a bit of an incident with the French and got a penalty which was a bit unfortunate and we spent the rest of the race catching up.”

“The race went right down to the last five metres which was very exciting but unfortunately it didn’t go our way this time,” he said.

The Silver medal capped off a great year for Belcher and Page who have only been sailing together for two years as they were presented with the Gold medals for the overall ISAF Sailing World Cup to go along with their 2010 470 World Championship.

“It’s been a stellar year for us, especially over the last month where we’ve been on fire,” said Page. “In our last four events we’ve had two seconds and two firsts, winning the World Championship was our first priority and winning the World Cup was our second so it’s been a great year, we’ve ticked all the boxes that we wanted to and are coming along well as a team.”

Australian Brendan Casey also featured on the final day of racing in Weymouth, sailing in the Finn medal race. Casey finished the race fifth to move to eighth overall in the Finn class.

The three Golds and Silver medal on the final day came off the back of Daniel Fitzgibbon and Rachael Cox’s Gold on Friday, capping off a great final round of the ISAF Sailing World Cup for the Australian Sailing Team.

The four gold medals and a silver medal meant Australia was best performed country on the medal table ahead of the French who claimed three gold medals and two silver medals from the thirteen events in Weymouth.

DeckHardware at the Sydney Boat Show 2010

Once again we need to thank our good friends for helping us out. At this years Sydney International Boat Show we have Cameron McDonald helping out on our stand. Cam not only does some great work in Sydney for Allwood Sails he is also the partner of Mel's Two Handed Crew Kate Cooper (who is away so gets out of helping). Cam is well known for his indecision as to what skiff he is sailing next - 12's, 14's, 16's or 18's and how he will get to the race.

The other helping hand we have is Ronan McCormick, Ronan's Partner Sarah works with Mel at her Part-Time Job. Ronan is a sailor from Ireland who has previous experience in Chandleries in Australia and Ireland. We are very lucky to have some people able to give us a helping hand.

ISAF Sailing World Cup in Kiel, Germany

The wind finally played along on day four of round six of the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Kiel, Germany, with all the Olympic Class fleets completing at least one race on the penultimate day of the regatta.

The Australian Sailing Team 470 men’s crew of Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page picked up where they left off on Saturday, winning a fourth race, while Tom Slingsby held onto his lead in the Laser class and Katie Spithill and crew continue to battle it out for a semi-final position in the Women’s Match Racing competition.

Belcher and Page continued their perfect start to the regatta with their fourth win from four starts to head into Wednesday’s medal race with a four point lead over Fantela and Marenic of Croatia with the Swedish crew of Anton and Ostling six points further back in third.

“It was nice to finally get a race in after two days of sitting around,” said Page. “Once again it was very light but a fair and even race with shifts of only 10 to 15 degrees which were slow and gradual.”

“The race was a good one for us and we’re happy with how we’re sailing,” he said. “We’ve had mixed conditions throughout the regatta and it’s nice to know that we’re going well in all conditions.”

“So tomorrow we head into the medal race and we’ll just go and race the best we can. The points are a little too hard to control in any way so we’ll just head out there and see what happens.”

The Laser fleet also completed one race with Tom Slingsby finishing in third position and continues to lead the regatta. After a great opening day where he won all three races Slingsby’s third position on Tuesday ensured that he held onto the lead heading into the final medal race.

Slingsby has a four point lead over Canadian Michael Leigh with German sailor Philipp Buhl three points adrift in third.

The Australian Women’s Match Racing Team crew of Katie Spithill, Jessica Eastwell and Angela Farrell are locked in a tight battle for a semi-final position with American Anna Tunnicliffe.

In a long day on the water for the Australian crew they started the day with the final two Gold Round Robin races, recording a victory against Great Britain’s MacGregor and a loss to Lehtinen of Finland to finish the round third overall and set up a best of five quarter-final match up with Tunnicliffe.

“After a positive finish to the Gold Round Robin we’re now in the middle of our quarter-final match up with the Americans,” said Spithill. “After the opening three races we’re trailing two to one with the final two races to be held tomorrow morning.”

“We’ve now got nothing to lose, we’re going to go out there tomorrow knowing exactly what we have to do and put everything into it,” she said. “The conditions were painful again, very shifty and very light but the race committee did a good job of getting the races in and know when to call them off when necessary.”

“We worked well as a team today, it was hard work out there today for Jess and Angela as they had to try and find a patch of find and not a patch of glass and they did a great job,” said Spithill.

Fellow Australian’s Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Olivia Price had a good day’s racing, winning their final two Repechage Round Robin races to leave them tied for second position in the group with Germany’s Silke Hahlbrock. Unfortunately the Aussie trio was knocked out on a count back as they had lost to Hahlbrock the day before and finished the regatta in ninth position.

In the RS:X women’s class Jessica Crisp heads into the final medal race in sixth position following a fourth and a seventh in Tuesday’s two races. Crisp is just nine points off the Bronze medal position and 12 points off the lead and with the medal race worth double points is still well and truly in contention for a medal.

The Laser Radial fleet was able to complete one race on Tuesday with Krystal Weir finishing in 11th position which sees her finish the qualifying round ninth overall, booking a spot in the medal race. Fellow Australian Megan de Lange just missed out on a medal race berth in 13th position overall, a strong result in her first major international regatta for the year.

The Australian Sailing Development Squad crew of Sam Kivell and Will Ryan are 15th in the 470 men’s fleet with their best race of the regatta coming on Tuesday with a third place finish. Max Taylor and Ben Gunther are in 32nd position while Alexander and Patrick Conway are 69th.

Laser sailor Ryan Palk’s great European summer has continued and will take part in his first major medal race after finishing the qualifying series in 10th position. Ashley Brunning sits in 26th position and James Burman is 34th.

In the 49er class Steven Thomas and Nick Brownie finished the qualifying series in 37th position in their first major international regatta together.

West Australian Tim Castles is in 41st position in the Finn class after five races.

Where is Phil going now?

There is a lot happening at DeckHardware at the moment.   We are about to send Phil on the road to promote the new products Billy Bung and TruPlug.   Over the next few weeks he will be travelling up the coast of Australia to Far North Queensland, then down to Melbourne and across to Adelaide.   Just a heads up for those in the region, every time Phil has tried to get to Far North Queensland he has been stopped by flood waters!

The other exciting product that Phil will have on him is the new Liros Dyneema SK90!   We have a few samples and limited information as Liros are still going through the initial testing.  This is a process Liros take very seriously and we will publish technical information once available.

We have timed it so that Phil gets back just in time to get ready for the Sydney Boat Show.   We are expecting this to be our biggest yet and we will have the Billy Bung on display so people can see how it works.   We will also be releasing our new DeckHardware CD.   This will have lots of Splicing Information, Tech Sheets, Catalogues, Videos and much more.

If you would like to catch up with Phil and talk about the range we distribute please contact phil@deckhardware.com.au  he will have limited access to the internet whilst away but as always will be supplying us with Images of the places he sees and stories too of his travels.   Both relating to our industry as well as the land and places he gets to see.
